Jennifer Garner isn't just known for her roles in Hollywood blockbusters – she's also been a fierce advocate for privacy when it comes to her family. On July 21, during an episode of "Shut Up Evan," Garner bravely opened up about the relentless paparazzi frenzy that once engulfed her life, putting her family and those around them at risk.
"It was a danger to everyone around us," the actress, now 54, revealed. She shared how photographers' persistence reached a "totally ludicrous" level before California stepped in with a 2013 law aimed at protecting children of public figures. This law, which Garner and fellow actress Halle Berry supported, imposes stricter penalties on those who aggressively target minors due to their parents' fame.
"If I went through a yellow light, 15 cars would go through the red behind me. They would drive up onto people's lawns, even on a hillside," Garner recalled.
Garner reflected on the emotional toll of raising her three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck – Violet, 20; Fin, 17; and Samuel, 14 – while they grew up in the glaring spotlight. The paparazzi's pursuit was so intense that safety became a major concern. "We were trying to have our little one play soccer, and the association asked us to stop because there were 20 cars coming," she added.
Despite her children being older now, the paparazzi remain a constant fixture in Garner's life. She shared that she has developed an "interesting relationship" with two photographers who have been "assigned" to her for over two decades. "We've had some really real-life moments together," she admitted, explaining that she once trusted a familiar photographer in a moment of fear.
While promoting her latest series, "The Five-Star Weekend," Garner drew parallels between her own life and her character, Hollis. "I can tell you, Hollis has it right: You call your friends," she told USA TODAY. For Garner, leaning on her support network has been crucial in handling the pressures of fame.
The actress's candid reflections highlight the ongoing challenges public figures face and the importance of protective measures for their families. As Garner continues to navigate the complexities of fame, she remains a steadfast advocate for privacy and safety, both for herself and others in similar situations.
