I learned this firsthand when I traveled 3,000 miles from New York to Southern California, only to have our meeting canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. But a week later, there she was, calling in from a villa in Bali during a midnight Zoom session, fresh from celebrating her 18th birthday. "I've been on the road nonstop," Sky shared, the ocean-blue villa walls framing her vibrant energy.

“I’ve always shared videos [on social media] to tell a story and hopefully inspire people, especially girls,” she says. “Growing up with so many eyes on me, I always knew why I was doing it.”

A Life Beyond Medals

Sky's calendar is as packed as her trophy shelf. From surfing competitions in Virginia Beach to skateboarding events in Rome, Sacramento, Japan, and beyond, her journey is relentless. Yet, for Sky, it's not just about the accolades. At 13, she snagged a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and four years later, she repeated the feat in Paris. But medals don't define her. "Skating and surfing are only one part of my life," Sky insists. "They've never defined who I am."

Her roots run deep in Miyazaki, Japan, where she was the only mixed kid in town. Sky's upbringing between Japan, Great Britain, and California shaped her unique perspective. Choosing to represent Great Britain in competitions was a family decision, one that allowed her to maintain her love for skateboarding without the pressure.

Embracing the Journey

Now 18, Sky is on a quest for independence, eager to get her driver's license and handle more responsibilities. Yet, her close-knit family remains a cornerstone of her life. "I'm so close with my family, especially my dad," she reveals. "He's my coach, too, so we've always done everything together."

Beyond the ramps and waves, Sky is a typical teenager, buzzing about TikTok and Love Island, and sporting stacks of charm bracelets and turquoise rings. Her sense of self is unwavering, a beacon for other girls in male-dominated sports. "Girls shouldn’t feel scared to take up space," she declares, a sentiment that echoes her own journey.
