Actor Shia LaBeouf has once again found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. On Wednesday, the actor pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery, following a dramatic incident outside a New Orleans bar during Mardi Gras back in February. The verdict? Probation and a mandatory alcohol treatment program, as decreed by an Orleans Parish judge.
Known for his roles in blockbusters like "Transformers" and "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull," LaBeouf's latest headlines aren't about his acting chops. Following his February arrest near New Orleans' iconic French Quarter, video footage revealed a shirtless LaBeouf shoving a person to the ground and hitting another in the face, reportedly causing a possible nose dislocation.
“Mr. LaBeouf came to court today wanting to take accountability for his part in what happened, and he has done so,” said Sarah Chervinsky, the actor's attorney.
Orleans Parish Judge Juana Marine-Lombard handed LaBeouf a six-month suspended sentence along with two years of probation. The actor must steer clear of the victims and the bar involved in the incident. LaBeouf's attorney, Chervinsky, downplayed the event as a "minor Mardi Gras bar tussle," denying any bias or prejudice allegations.
Jeffrey Damnit, a performer involved in the fracas, accused LaBeouf of homophobic slurs and threats earlier that night. Damnit's attorney, Michael Kennedy, emphasized the importance of safety and equality in New Orleans, expressing hope that LaBeouf's rehab will improve his behavior.
LaBeouf is no stranger to legal woes. His rap sheet includes a 2017 assault charge in New York City and a public drunkenness arrest in Georgia while filming "The Peanut Butter Falcon." In 2020, he faced misdemeanor battery and petty theft charges in Los Angeles, and faced a lawsuit from ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs over abuse allegations, which was settled in July.
Despite a promising start with Disney's "Even Stevens," LaBeouf's career has been marred by personal struggles. As he faces these new challenges, the world watches to see if he'll turn over a new leaf.
