Rumer Willis, the talented daughter of Hollywood legends Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, has emerged victorious in a dramatic custody showdown. The 37-year-old actress has been awarded primary physical custody of her three-year-old daughter, Louetta, following a fiery court battle with ex-partner Derek Richard Thomas. The court's decision comes after a tumultuous breakup in August 2024, ending a two-year relationship.
In a bid to maintain stability for young Louetta, Rumer and Derek will share joint legal custody and are required to engage in co-parenting counseling. Communication between the two will be facilitated through a specialized app, ensuring a seamless co-parenting experience. Derek will have Louetta every other weekend starting June 20, with overnight visits commencing in August without third-party supervision.
“Mr Thomas is very pleased with the interim determination by the court on the custody issues,” stated his attorney, Mike Kretzmer, reflecting a hopeful outlook on the future of his relationship with Louetta.
The court battle, which began in July 2025, was fraught with intense allegations from both sides. Rumer accused Derek of emotional abuse, with claims of "insane emotional abuse" occurring even in front of their daughter. Her mother, Demi Moore, supported these claims, describing Derek's behavior as "aggressive" and controlling.
Derek, on the other hand, denied all allegations of domestic violence and coercive control. He asserted that their relationship ended due to mutual interests and not because of any violent or intimidating behavior on his part.
Rumer's decision to leave the relationship was influenced by a poignant moment while attending her friend Maeve Reilly's wedding. She realized the relationship with Derek lacked the love and respect she witnessed during the vows. "Your wedding literally was a huge reckoning moment for me in my life," she confessed on The Inside Edit podcast, acknowledging the need to prioritize her own self-worth.
As the court proceedings continue, both parties are set to present further evidence. Derek's legal team is optimistic about demonstrating his commitment as a loving father to Louetta. Meanwhile, Rumer is focused on providing a nurturing environment for her daughter, free from the shadows of past conflicts.
This custody battle not only highlights the challenges faced by co-parents but also underscores the importance of putting the child's well-being first amidst personal differences.
