The Sparks That Ignited a Comedy Romance

Lenny Henry, famous for his comedic flair, has been in a relationship with casting director Lisa Makin for over 15 years. But before she entered the scene, Lenny was married to the beloved Vicar of Dibley star, Dawn French. Their love story began on the alternative comedy circuit, where Lenny initially tried to recruit Dawn and her comedy partner, Jennifer Saunders, for his show. Though they declined, a spark ignited between Lenny and Dawn that would change his life.

In a candid chat with The Times in 2022, Lenny confessed that before Dawn, his dating life was a carousel of fleeting romances. "During this period, I'd been serial dating a variety of dancers from summer shows, funkateers and fellow clubbers," he shared. He admitted none of these relationships were grounded in genuine companionship, leaving him feeling increasingly lonely.

"The next time I met Dawn I realised that you could have a reciprocal conversation with someone and not have to perform or amuse them all the time. They could make you laugh too. A massive light bulb went off over my head. I was compelled by [Dawn]."

A Wedding to Remember

After this revelation, Lenny and Dawn's connection deepened, culminating in a grand wedding in 1984. Lenny reminisced about their desire for an extravagant celebration, complete with a big church, a lively reception, and a DJ to wrap up the day. "To my mind, if we weren’t going to get married in the right way – big church, reception, dress suits, food, friends and family jammed into a fancy-schmancy chi-chi hall with a big band and Big Al the DJ winding up the day's events with a big disco – then we might as well not do it at all," he recalled.

The Amicable End

Their marriage journey lasted 26 years before they decided to part ways in 2010. The couple emphasized their amicable separation and commitment to co-parenting their daughter. Reflecting on the split, Lenny told The Mirror in 2012, "I got divorced... it wasn't that bad," noting that it even brought him closer to their daughter, Billie.

Years later, Lenny candidly shared with the Express that the end of their marriage was a gradual realization for both. "There's generally a situation where one partner wants the marriage to finish more than the other," he said. Dawn echoed this sentiment, telling The Mirror in 2017 that their friendship endured beyond their marriage. "Remarkably, we seem to have shifted with relative ease from a 25-year marriage to a lasting friendship. I am amazed by us. There is no war, we've turned out to be the best of friends."

Their story is a testament to the power of mutual respect and the enduring bond of friendship, even after love takes a different form.
