A Family Legacy Across Oceans

John Lithgow, the celebrated actor known for his roles in "3rd Rock from the Sun" and "The Crown," recently opened up about his family's incredible journey from Wales to America. His grandfather, Orlo Price, alongside his seven brothers, left Wales in the 19th century, settling in the picturesque Welsh Hills of Ohio. This area, with its lush landscapes and abundant natural springs, reminded them of home and became a thriving place for their fruit farming endeavors. Lithgow fondly recalls visiting this area as a child, describing it as a place reminiscent of his ancestral homeland, "It was like visiting Wales."

"It was almost like a 'How Green Was My Valley' story," Lithgow shared with Lucy Owen on BBC Radio Wales.

Tracing Roots and Connections

Despite his deep family ties, Lithgow admits he's only visited Wales once, during his time as a drama student. "It's sitting there, waiting for me to go seek out my roots," he mused, reflecting on his singular journey to Caernarfon. His Welsh heritage has, however, followed him through his career, as seen when he played Cardiff-born children's author Roald Dahl on stage, earning an Olivier award for his performance. This spring, the play moved to Broadway, continuing his connection to his roots.

On-Set Antics and New Projects

Lithgow's career is peppered with memorable collaborations, including his work with Welsh actor Matthew Rhys in "Perry Mason." Their playful on-set dynamic led to the creation of nicknames – "Jiggles" for Lithgow and "Wiggles" for Rhys. Lithgow's latest project, "Jimpa," sees him starring alongside Olivia Coleman in a film about generational changes in the gay community. He describes it as a "joyful project," highlighting the inclusive environment on set. "In the space of a couple of years, I've worked with Olivia Coleman and Matthew Rhys, who are like, the best in the business," Lithgow remarked, underscoring his enthusiasm for his recent collaborations.
