This headline referred to her decision to relinquish full custody of her now 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, to her ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko.

The Struggles Behind the Decision

At a recent event promoting her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," Panettiere shared her painful journey with the audience. "You might as well have taken a knife and stabbed me in the heart," she confessed, reflecting on the weight of the decision she made for her daughter's well-being. Despite the personal heartache, Panettiere emphasized that sometimes a parent must choose what is best for their child, even if it means making unimaginable sacrifices.

"If anyone knew me, they [would] know that I would do absolutely anything for my daughter," she stated, as reported by Page Six. "And sometimes that means not what you want as a mum or what's going to make you feel good as a parent, but what's best for them."

Panettiere candidly discussed her feelings of guilt and incapacity to care for Kaya amid her battles with mental health issues and addiction. She signed over full custody in 2018 but remains a devoted mother, visiting Kaya in Ukraine whenever possible. The actress wants her daughter to understand the love behind her decisions, stating, "I don't want her ever to read it and think any of it was her fault. I love her so dearly."

Panettiere hopes her memoir will help Kaya, and others, understand the complexities of her journey. "This beautiful child is healthy and everything to celebrate," she added, underscoring her commitment to protecting Kaya, especially during her formative years.
