Zelda Williams Takes a Stand Against AI Deepfakes

Zelda Williams, the talented actress and filmmaker, has had enough of the digital reincarnations of her late father, the legendary Robin Williams. In a passionate social media post, she pleaded with fans to quit sending her AI-generated videos that attempt to mimic her father's iconic persona. Robin Williams, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 63, remains a cherished figure in Hollywood, making these digital imitations all the more painful for his family.

“Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad,” Zelda implored. “Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t. If you’re just trying to troll me, I’ve seen way worse, I’ll restrict and move on. But please, if you’ve got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s NOT what he’d want.”

A Plea for Respect and Authenticity

Zelda's heartfelt message didn't stop there. She spoke candidly about the unsettling trend of using AI to resurrect deceased celebrities, reducing their legacies to cheap digital puppetry. "To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to ‘this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that’s enough’... is maddening," she expressed, highlighting the disrespect involved in such practices. "You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings," she added, underscoring the lack of authenticity and respect in these creations.

Condemning AI as "the Future"

Zelda Williams is not shy about her views on AI's role in the entertainment industry. She firmly dismisses the notion that AI represents the future, arguing instead that it merely recycles the past. "And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it ‘the future’. AI is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be re-consumed," she declared, warning of the dangers of such technology. This isn't Zelda's first time speaking out against AI – she previously supported the Screen Actors Guild's campaign against AI, voicing concerns over the ethical implications of recreating actors who cannot consent.

Remembering Robin Williams

Robin Williams, known for his iconic roles in films like Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, and Mrs. Doubtfire, left an indelible mark on the world of comedy and film. Before his untimely death, he battled health challenges, including Lewy body dementia, a debilitating brain disease. His daughter Zelda continues to honor his legacy by advocating for respect and authenticity in how we remember and celebrate those who have passed.
