WWE has announced the passing of one of its legendary figures, Bobby Duncum Sr., at the age of 81. Known for his rugged persona and fierce competitiveness, Duncum was a staple in the wrestling scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. His journey began on the football field, but it was in the wrestling ring that he truly made his mark.
Bobby Duncum Sr.'s death was confirmed by World Wrestling Entertainment in a heartfelt statement, though the cause of death remains undisclosed. "WWE is saddened to learn that Bobby Duncum Sr. has passed away. One of the most feared villains of the territories, the rugged cowboy from Austin, Texas, was as tough as they came," the statement read.
"Carrying on the great tradition of Texas football stars turned pro wrestlers, Duncum entered the ring and became infamous for his wild street fights and brutal battles against WWE Legends like Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund," WWE added.
Duncum's career was marked by his transition from professional football to wrestling. A graduate of West Texas State University, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967 and played four professional games in 1968. However, it was his wrestling exploits that truly defined him.
Standing at 6ft 7 and weighing 285 pounds, Duncum was known for his intense matches and memorable catchphrases like "You unnastan?". He was a key member of the iconic Heenan Family in the AWA, led by WWE Hall of Famer Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
Following the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from across the wrestling community. Former wrestling manager John LaRocca praised him as a "super talent" who "moved like a cat in the ring." Reporter Mike Mooneyham also paid homage, noting Duncum's status as "a top heel in the '60s, '70s and into the '80s, well respected and tough as nails."
Bobby Duncum Sr. leaves behind a lasting legacy, not only as a wrestling icon but also as the father of fellow wrestler Bobby Duncum Jr., who tragically passed away in 2000. His impact on the wrestling world will be remembered for years to come.
