Whoopi Goldberg is in the hot seat after her recent comments on Tiger Woods' arrest have sparked outrage across social media. The legendary golfer found himself in the headlines once again after a rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida, leading to a public announcement that he would seek treatment. Despite pleading not guilty, Woods remains a topic of heated discussion.
On a recent episode of The View, Goldberg – alongside co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Sara Haines, with guest panelist Whitney Cummings – tackled the topic head-on. Goldberg, who shares a personal connection with Woods, expressed her support by saying, "You know, Tiger is a friend of mine. I wish him nothing but the best. I don't like kicking a man when he's down."
The conversation took a turn when Joy Behar suggested, "He's very rich. Just get a driver," adding a quip about avoiding Justin Timberlake, referencing his own arrest last year. The panelists debated Woods' decision not to hire a driver, with Hostin pointing out Woods' extensive medical history and chronic pain.
Goldberg, however, defended Woods with a curious rationale: "I'll tell you why," she explained. "It's nice to have a driver, but also you don't want to be that guy that everyone says, well, why is he always being driven around?' You can't win. You can't win."
The conversation didn't sit well with many viewers, who took to social media to voice their disapproval.
“WHOOPI GOLDBERG, YOU DROPPED THE BALL THIS TIME. THAT HE IS YOUR FRIEND AND THAT DUMMIES WILL SAY IT IS ELITIST TO HAVE A CHAUFFEUR DOES NOT EXCUSE TIGER WOODS. IF YOU ARE HIS FRIEND THEN TELL HIM TO STOP DRIVING AND GET TREATMENT BEFORE HE KILLS SOMEONE, GOSH DANG IT!!!!!” one person wrote on X.
Another viewer criticized Goldberg for making excuses, saying, "Whoopi, stop making excuses for grown a** men! ‘Because I know him’ means nothing! Tiger has problems, just like Timberlake and Britney Spears!"
Others were disappointed in the overall handling of the discussion, questioning why celebrities like Woods would choose to drive when they have the means for alternatives. "Sunny & Whoopi really disappointed me today. There is no excuse, no excuse for Tiger Woods or anyone else, especially of his status, to be driving drunk," one commenter noted.
The online uproar highlights the ongoing debate about personal responsibility and the privileges of celebrity status, with many urging Woods to make safer choices in the future.
