Wendy Williams' journey under conservatorship has been nothing short of a drama-filled saga. From swirling headlines to emotional fan support, the story has kept everyone on edge. A top neurologist recently disputed her frontotemporal dementia diagnosis, the very thing that has kept her legally restrained since 2022. But now, her attorney, Joe Tacopina, is optimistic that Wendy's freedom is just around the corner.
"There are guardianship attorneys ... and we're watching and waiting, and they've assured Wendy by year's end she'll be out of guardianship," Tacopina confidently shared on "Nightline."
With December 10 already here, Wendy could reclaim her independence in less than three weeks.
Confusion has surrounded Wendy's medical status. While some question her condition, Tacopina assured "Nightline" that Wendy is far from needing guardianship. He even suggested that others might be more suitable candidates for such arrangements.
The lawyer attributed her previous dementia diagnosis to alcohol-induced complications. "There's something called alcohol-induced dementia. That may have been something Wendy was suffering from back in [2023], 24. She was an alcoholic, no question about it," Tacopina revealed. "Wendy was drunk almost 24 hours a day. She looked like she needed help. She did need help. She needed alcohol rehabilitation."
A fresh neurological evaluation in New York City concluded that Wendy shows no signs of the degenerative condition. This revelation directly challenges the claims made by her court-appointed guardian.
Following the new medical insights, Wendy's legal team is ready to push for the end of her guardianship. If the judge resists, Tacopina is prepared to take it to a jury. However, he remains confident that it won’t come to that.
Meanwhile, Wendy is savoring moments of freedom. Recently, she was seen out on the town with her niece, Alex Finnie. The pair celebrated Finnie's birthday with a dinner at Brooklyn Chop House and later at Fresco by Scotto, where they enjoyed a night of sparklers and laughter.
Fans were thrilled to see Wendy smiling, with many expressing their support and admiration for both her and Alex. Earlier this fall, Wendy also made a surprise appearance at New York Fashion Week, marking her first major public outing in months, where she expressed feeling "like a zillion dollars."
The journey to reclaim her life has been long, but with new developments and support from loved ones, Wendy Williams is closer than ever to breaking free from her conservatorship.
