The never-ending saga of Rebel Wilson's directorial debut, The Deb, has taken yet another dramatic twist. This time, it's an audio recording that's shaking things up, allegedly capturing Wilson's crisis PR team strategizing a smear campaign against Amanda Ghost, a producer on the troubled film. The Hollywood Reporter got hold of this recording, which forms part of a freshly released deposition transcript.
In this explosive tape, Jed Wallace, a crisis PR guru, seems to be outlining a plan to spread damaging rumors about Ghost online. The alleged conversation even goes as far as suggesting creating anonymous websites to circulate false claims, painting Ghost as a criminal mastermind. Ghost, of course, has denied all these allegations.
"We can't just do, like, oh, she's a bitch, she sucks," a voice identified as Wallace is heard saying. "It's, like, it's got to be really, really heavy and connected to something that heavy."
The audio recording further alleges that Wallace was directing entertainment publicist Melissa Nathan and others on how to amplify these accusations through anonymous content and online platforms. The identity of who authorized such a bold move remains shrouded in mystery. At one point, Wallace reportedly names Hollywood's power lawyer Bryan Freedman, who was Wilson's counsel at the time.
Adding fuel to the fire, Katie Case, a former vice president at TAG, claimed in a deposition that she received the recording from Nathan. Ghost's legal team argued that she was instructed to review a document outlining accusations against Ghost. The now-deleted site, aptly titled "Amanda Ghost is a Destroyer of Worlds," posed as a whistleblower's account.
Rebel Wilson has consistently denied any involvement in the creation of these smear sites. Her lawyer, Camille Vasquez, emphasized that Wilson has refuted these allegations both on TV and in her sworn testimony. Yet, Ghost's legal team suspects otherwise and believes their evidence backs this claim.
This isn't the first time Wallace's PR firm has been in hot water. Previously, they were embroiled in a controversy over the film adaptation of It Ends With Us. Wallace was accused of planting anti-Blake Lively sentiment online, a claim he has strongly denied.
As the legal battles rage on, Wilson, Freedman, and Nathan have remained tight-lipped, not responding to requests for comment. Meanwhile, the drama surrounding The Deb shows no signs of fading away, with lawsuits and counterclaims continuing to pile up.
