In the whirlwind that was the live-action Snow White film, Rachel Zegler stood at the eye of the storm. A year has passed since the casting controversy and political backlash hit the headlines, and Zegler has had time to reflect. The uproar began right from her casting in 2021 when critics claimed she couldn't portray Snow White due to her Colombian and Polish heritage. “I was told I wasn’t enough of one thing for West Side Story and too much of another for Snow White," she shared with Harper's Bazaar U.K., lamenting the confusion of navigating such criticism in her early twenties.
“I do think there’s an argument to be made that, in the public eye at least, when you’re two things, you’re simultaneously nothing. But I refuse to assimilate for anybody else’s comfort.”
Beyond her heritage, Zegler faced backlash for her political expressions, particularly her pro-Palestine stance, which some blamed for the film's lackluster performance. A tweet in support of Palestine even led to a reprimand from producer Marc Platt. Yet, Zegler remains steadfast. “I’ve said what I feel, and that will always be a testament to my core beliefs as a human," she asserted, emphasizing the importance of intent over impact. She acknowledges now that sometimes silence can be more powerful than words.
Reflecting on the tumultuous period, Zegler admits she might have handled things differently with hindsight. "If I’d been able to predict everything that would come my way, the threats to my safety, I would have just thrown my phone into the ocean," she mused. It's a sentiment many can relate to in our hyper-connected world. Despite the storm, Zegler remains resolute, her experiences shaping a stronger, more self-aware artist.
