Rachael Ray, the culinary queen known for her vibrant personality, has a penchant for the quiet charm of Italy. The 57-year-old chef recently opened up about the contrasting lifestyles she and her husband, John Cusimano, prefer. While Rachael finds solace in her Italian villa, her husband is a true New Yorker at heart. "I live [in Italy] as long and as much as I can," Rachael shared, revealing her love for the serene environment. Meanwhile, John thrives amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City.
The couple has managed to blend their worlds by owning multiple homes – an apartment in NYC, a home in Lake Luzerne, upstate New York, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 2020, and a beautifully renovated villa in Tuscany, lovingly called "Casa Zidoro." This balance allows them to enjoy the best of both worlds.
“I prefer to be in Italy because it's quiet, and [our adopted] dog [Bella Boo Blue] hates New York,” Rachael admitted, embracing her peaceful Italian lifestyle.
Rachael and John’s love story began in 2001 at a party thrown by a mutual friend. As John fondly recalls, "I like to say we saw each other among a sea of knees." Their connection was instant, and by September 2005, they were married in Italy – a place that holds sentimental value for them both.
To celebrate their 10th anniversary, the couple renewed their vows at their Tuscan villa, inviting culinary stars like Guy Fieri and Anne Burrell, alongside family and friends. Although they don't have children, their bond is strengthened by their shared love for dogs. They were heartbroken when their pit bull, Isaboo, passed away in 2020. Paying homage to their beloved pet, they adopted Bella Boo Blue.
Rachael's affection for Italy is deeply rooted. In 2017, she and John purchased their dream villa in Tuscany. Rachael expressed her joy, saying, "I love it there and have missed it. My mother's family and both of John's parents’ families hail from there." This connection to their ancestry and the serene beauty of the landscape made Tuscany the perfect place for their home.
The chef's decision was a dream come true, and she shared her enthusiasm in her magazine, Rachael Ray In Season. "When I saw the home for the first time, I fell in love with the fields and the views," she reminisced. This Tuscan paradise not only symbolizes a personal achievement but also serves as a tranquil retreat for the couple away from the bustling city life.
Despite their differing preferences, Rachael and John continue to support each other's passions, making their marriage a harmonious blend of city excitement and countryside calm.
