Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are poised to usher in a new era for the British monarchy, potentially discarding many of the traditional, and often "old-fashioned," royal duties. As the first true female "spare" in the royal family, 10-year-old Charlotte, alongside her 7-year-old brother Louis, is already setting the stage for what could be a groundbreaking shift in royal roles. While the siblings of a monarch have traditionally taken on full-time royal duties, their father, Prince William, has hinted at a different future.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold provides insight into what this modern approach could look like. "There will be a high demand on the children, because their workload will be increased," Harrold explains, speaking on behalf of Study Dog. "But the Royal Family may not be carrying out quite the same responsibilities by the time they are old enough." Harrold, who served King Charles from 2004 to 2011, suggests that the young royals might even embrace brand endorsements or influencer roles, marking a significant departure from traditional duties.
Prince William has expressed a desire to move away from numerous traditional engagements in favor of fewer but more impactful visits. This could mean a departure from the classic ribbon-cutting ceremonies and formal visits to dignitaries. Harrold notes, "It might not be the same as old-fashioned visits with cutting ribbons and visiting important figures." While some traditions might continue, their roles are expected to evolve significantly.
There is also the possibility that Charlotte and Louis might not take on full-time royal duties at all. "I think that's something that their father and mother will support," Harrold remarks, emphasizing the freedom and choice the young royals might have. He adds, "If Charlotte turns around to her dad and says, ‘Do you know what, I really want to become an architect,’ I think he would be welcoming of that." Ultimately, the duo is growing up in a world where they have "more freedom and a lot more choice" than previous royal spares.
