Prince Harry is baring his soul down under, diving deep into the struggles of early fatherhood. During a visit to a Melbourne football club on the second day of his Australian tour with wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Harry shared his journey of healing and growth. The couple is in Australia for four days, focusing on engagements that highlight sport, mental health, and veterans' affairs.
While visiting the Western Bulldogs Australian rules football club on April 15, Harry candidly spoke about feeling disconnected from his children at times, a sentiment many new dads might relate to. "Certainly, I felt a disconnection because my wife was the one creating life, and I was there to witness it," he revealed at the event, which was cohosted by the Movember mental health charity.
"From a therapy standpoint, you want to be the best version of yourself for your kids," Harry, 41, shared. "And I knew that I had stuff from the past that I needed to deal with, and therefore prepare myself to basically cleanse myself of the past."
Harry and Meghan's two children, Archie and Lilibet, are not joining them on this trip. The couple, who stepped back from their roles as senior royals in 2020 to pursue independence and privacy, are revisiting Australia after their last trip in 2018, during which they announced Meghan's first pregnancy.
Their current visit, however, has received a mixed reception. While some Australians, including families at a children's hospital in Melbourne, warmly welcomed the couple, others have questioned their motives. An opinion piece in the Sydney Morning Herald described the visit as "a continuation of tone-deaf hawking by a couple estranged from reality."
In a twist from their previous royal duties, the Sussexes are also engaging in commercial activities during their stay. Meghan will host a wellness retreat at a luxury beachside hotel in Sydney, offering yoga, manifestation, and sound healing. Tickets for the retreat start at AU$2,699, or $1,912, per person, emphasizing the couple's shift towards personal and professional ventures outside their royal past.
