The Deceptive Plan Unveiled

Sarah Mills, a woman from Nixa, has found herself in the hot seat, facing felony charges for a scam that sounds like something out of a Hollywood thriller. Mills is accused of impersonating celebrities to coax elderly people into sending her money. The charges against her include money laundering, stealing, and conspiracy.

Celebrity Impersonations Lead to Large-Scale Fraud

According to investigators, Mills allegedly masterminded a scheme between April 2024 and June 2025, raking in a whopping $22,350 from unsuspecting victims. The audacity of her plan is jaw-dropping. One victim believed he was in a romantic relationship with none other than actress Nicola Coughlan, while another thought she was helping Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow out of a sticky contract situation.

“Sarah Mills knowingly and repeatedly participated in a scam, depriving the victims of funds totaling $22,350,” the probable cause statement reveals.

The Legal Fallout

The Nixa Police Department, alongside agencies in Virginia, New Mexico, Ohio, and South Carolina, worked tirelessly to unravel this complex case. After Mills' arrest on December 2, she was booked into the Christian County Jail, though she was released due to a lack of a timely warrant. However, the formal charges weren't far behind. By December 5, Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Tuohy had filed charges, and Mills now faces a cash-only bond of $25,000.

The Scheme Unveiled

Mills allegedly deposited some of the swindled money into her own bank accounts for personal use while converting other portions into Bitcoin to further the scam. It appears she wasn't working alone, as the probable cause statement suggests she collaborated with others to execute the fraud.

The Nixa Police Department's press release on Mills' arrest sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the lengths to which some will go to exploit the vulnerable. "This case is a reminder of the importance of vigilance, especially when it comes to protecting our elderly citizens," noted Summer Rascoll, Nixa's Director of Communications.
