Michael Weatherly is back in action, and he's taking a trip down memory lane! The charming actor, known for his role as Special Agent Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo, recently shared some of his favorite moments with celebrity guest stars on the hit series NCIS. "We got to meet so many Hollywood royalty," Weatherly exclusively told PEOPLE, reflecting on the show's impressive roster of guest stars.
Weatherly, who originally starred in the series for 13 seasons until 2016, is now reprising his iconic role in the new Paramount+ spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, alongside Cote de Pablo. At a screening event in New York City, he opened up about the unforgettable experiences and stories from his time on the show. "Wow. I mean, there are so many funny stories," he said, before naming a few standout guests.
“Charles Durning was a really amazing guest star. Bob Newhart was hilarious, and I got to watch him do something that, it's too long a story for here, but I’ve probably told it somewhere,” Weatherly shared, adding that Newhart’s time on the show "taught me something too."
Weatherly fondly recalled working with the late Charles Durning, known for his Emmy-nominated role in season 2 as a Marine veteran. He also spoke about Bob Newhart, who played the former NCIS Chief Medical Examiner in season 8, leaving a lasting impression on the cast and crew.
Robert Wagner, another beloved guest star, portrayed Tony's father in 13 episodes, deepening the emotional resonance of the series. Weatherly and Wagner's connection went beyond NCIS, as Weatherly had previously played a young Wagner in the TV movie The Mystery of Natalie Wood.
Other notable guest stars who graced the NCIS stage include Jamie Lee Curtis, Zac Efron, Millie Bobby Brown, and Taye Diggs, adding to the show's legacy of attracting top-tier talent.
Since its premiere in 2003, NCIS has become a staple of television, spawning six successful spinoffs, including NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans. As fans eagerly await the premiere of season 23 in October, the new spinoff, Tony & Ziva, promises to deliver thrilling adventures.
The series follows Tony and Ziva as they navigate a dangerous run across Europe, uncovering a plot against them and their daughter. With a gripping storyline and dynamic cast, including John McNamara as showrunner, fans are in for a treat.
