Maggie Gyllenhaal Confesses to Early Jealousy

Maggie Gyllenhaal has opened up about feeling envious of her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, during the early stages of their careers. In a candid interview, she admitted, "I don't think I was in touch with the envy, but it was there." Reflecting on her younger years, Maggie shared how her brother's rapid rise to stardom in films like 'Brokeback Mountain' left her grappling with feelings of jealousy.

"I don't think I knew that at first, when I was young and Jake was a movie star right away," Maggie revealed.

The 'Dark Knight' actress recalled how both siblings began their onscreen journeys as children in the early 1990s, with Jake debuting in 'City Slickers' and Maggie in 'Waterland.' While Jake quickly became a household name, Maggie's path to success took a slightly different route. Despite the initial envy, Maggie has since found a deeper understanding of admiration and competition, acknowledging that "there's absolutely enough to go around."

A New Chapter: Collaborating on 'The Bride'

Fast forward to today, Maggie has directed Jake in her latest film, 'The Bride,' a project that has brought the siblings closer than ever. After years of maintaining separate careers, Maggie reached out to Jake for a role in her movie – a move she describes as "honest" and "vulnerable."

"I waited until I was absolutely sure that asking him to do this part was the right thing to do," she explained. The collaboration marked their first since 2001's 'Donnie Darko,' and Maggie couldn't have been more pleased with the experience, describing Jake as "so funny, so generous, so loving, and such a pleasure to have on set."

Building a Stronger Bond

Working together on 'The Bride' has fostered a new level of connection between the Gyllenhaals. "We've never been estranged, but we've never been as close as we are now," Maggie noted. She expressed joy over their growing relationship, emphasizing that "working with him on set" created a "live, exciting connection."

Jake's contributions extended beyond acting, as he also lent his voice to the film's soundtrack. "He's such an incredible singer, and I love hearing him sing," Maggie gushed. As 'The Bride' hits theaters on March 6, audiences will not only witness the Gyllenhaal siblings' cinematic reunion but also hear Jake's musical talents during the film's credits.
