Melbourne's cherished comedian, Magda Szubanski, is not only fighting a personal health battle but also a digital one. The "Kath and Kim" icon, currently facing a rare and aggressive form of cancer, took to social media this weekend to alert her fans of a fraudulent post circulating online.
The 64-year-old actress discovered an Instagram post that falsely portrayed her as a woman in a hospital bed, seeking donations for a fake fundraiser. "Ok. Dear peeps. This lovely lady – whoever she is – is not me," Szubanski clarified in her Instagram post. She urged her followers not to fall for the scam and to disregard any medical fundraiser claiming to be her. "If you want the real me you can always find me here. Otherwise – it’s a scam. Love to you all," she added.
“Ok. Dear peeps. This lovely lady – whoever she is – is not me,” Szubanski wrote in an Instagram post alongside the fake photo.
The response from Szubanski's community was swift and supportive. Fans and friends flooded the comments with messages of love and anger towards the scam. Former MasterChef winner Julie Goodwin expressed her disgust, stating, "Bloody lowlifes. Sending you so much love." Another fan echoed the sentiment, "Shame on the person who is misrepresenting and manipulating stories and images."
Despite the upsetting scam, Szubanski's fans continue to rally around her with unwavering support. One fan shared, "🧡to the one and only Magda Szubanski, hope you are feeling stronger every day." Others, like a cheeky "Kath and Kim" viewer, tried to lighten the mood with humor, suggesting, "Plot twist: Kim set this scam up to pay off her video shop fines."
Szubanski revealed her diagnosis of stage four Mantle Cell Lymphoma last year and has been undergoing intensive treatment in Melbourne. Her journey through chemotherapy and immunotherapy under the Nordic Protocol has been challenging, but she remains resilient. In her last health update in August, Szubanski thanked a young fan for dressing as her character Sharon Strzelecki, admitting that the gesture lifted her spirits amidst the grueling "chemo smacking me around."
