Liam Neeson, the iconic star of the Taken series, has candidly shared the heartfelt reason he steers clear of the steamy Fifty Shades of Grey films. For those who haven't been living under a rock, these films, based on E. L. James's novels, became a global sensation since their release between 2011 and 2021, captivating audiences with their racy portrayal of love and power dynamics. Despite the widespread popularity, Neeson has a unique connection that keeps him from indulging in the series.
The actor's reluctance stems from fond memories of Dakota Johnson, the actress who brought the character of Anastasia Steele to life. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show eight years ago, Neeson revealed he has never watched the films due to his past with Johnson's family. "You know I have to say, I love this guy from The Fall which is a fantastic series. I can’t watch those films [Fifty Shades of Grey] because I made a movie with Dakota’s mum many years ago and I used to swing Dakota around at the age of two. So I can’t – I just can’t see her as an adult, so forgive me," he shared.

Neeson's connection with Johnson dates back to 1992 when he starred alongside her mother, Melanie Griffith, in the film Shining Through. Set during World War II, this film saw Neeson and Griffith portraying characters caught in the intrigue of Nazi Germany. It's these cherished moments from the past that make it challenging for Neeson to view Johnson in her adult roles.
Despite the passage of over thirty years, Neeson's memories of Dakota as a child remain vivid, creating a barrier to watching the films that catapulted her to fame. It's a testament to the personal bonds formed in Hollywood – sometimes, they transcend the silver screen.
During the same interview, Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey, humorously chimed in after Neeson's confession, "I think I’ve swung her around a wee bit too." This light-hearted comment added to the charm of the conversation, showcasing the camaraderie shared among the stars.
It’s not every day you hear such a touching reason for avoiding a blockbuster series, but Neeson's heartfelt honesty is as compelling as any storyline in the Fifty Shades saga.
