Kurt Russell wasn't actively seeking a way out of Hollywood, but he found solace in the mountains after leaving Los Angeles. At 75, the actor cherishes his ranch life in Colorado, which allows him to indulge in daily activities he truly enjoys. "What I want to look at, what I want to be a part of – all the things that Colorado has to offer," he shared with People magazine. "I wanted to eventually get into the ranching life."
Russell and his longtime partner, Goldie Hawn, built a ranch together in Colorado over 40 years ago, where their family has flourished. "When Goldie and I got together, a couple of years later, we both built a ranch there together, where our family has grown up," he revealed. The "Tombstone" star noted that his decision to leave Hollywood wasn't a trendy choice at the time. "I wasn't escaping. I was just living where I live," he explained. "I was fortunate that it really didn't make any difference."
"But when I did it, nobody else was doing that. I had many people tell me, 'Well, that's goodbye. That's it.' I said, 'Well, we'll see.'"
Russell has witnessed many stars leave Los Angeles in recent years, opting for a more laid-back lifestyle similar to his own. "I don't dislike L.A.," he said. "It's just not my preference in terms of how I like to live my life." He highlighted the unique appeal of Old Snowmass, Colorado, where residents choose to live for the serenity it offers.
Life in Colorado has been transformative for Russell's children, providing them with a nature-rich upbringing. "They grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer," he explained. "There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I'm just more comfortable there." This peaceful environment reminds Russell of his own childhood in Maine.
Goldie Hawn, who has two children from a previous marriage and shares a son, Wyatt, with Russell, appreciates the tranquility of Colorado as well. The couple's decision to choose the mountains over the city was reinforced after an unsettling experience in their Los Angeles home, which was robbed while they were away. "What if we couldn't live in LA, where would we live?" Hawn pondered during a podcast appearance.
Their LA home invasion was a wake-up call, with Hawn recalling the moment she realized their home had been violated. "They had broken in from the balcony to our bedroom, our closets," she shared. The incident left a lasting impression, reinforcing their preference for the safety and calm of Colorado.
Russell and Hawn's choice to prioritize family and tranquility over Hollywood hustle speaks to a broader trend of celebrities seeking quieter pastures. "What I enjoy most is that [Hawn] really likes it in Colorado," Russell said, highlighting the joy they find in their mountain retreat.
