Kehlani is peeling back the curtain on the challenges that come with dating as a celebrity. The acclaimed R&B artist, who identifies as non-binary and uses she/they pronouns, candidly shared her experiences during a chat on Angel Reese's podcast, Unapologetically Angel, on December 11.
During the episode, Kehlani revealed how juggling her thriving music career with her most cherished role as a mother to her six-year-old daughter, Adeya, makes dating even more complicated. "When I'm not doing my art, I'm also trying to spend as much time with my child as I can. So there's that balance of where does a relationship sit and fit in between all of these?" she shared, highlighting the struggle of finding time for romance amidst her busy life.
Kehlani also touched on the anxiety-inducing nature of public dates, often marred by the prying eyes of fans and media. "And then you say something... And then you wake up the next day – 'Story time. I met Kehlani at a restaurant and she was a bitch and she was rude and I hate her.' And I'm like, the whole time you were just invading my [space]. It ruined the date, it ruined the vibes," she explained.
The "Folded" singer confessed that the constant scrutiny and invasion of privacy make it challenging to enjoy simple pleasures like holding hands at the movies or sharing a sushi dinner without being judged. "It's just at some point, you decide what kind of life you want to live and you're going to get scrutinized regardless," Kehlani reflected.
Kehlani's dating history has been a rollercoaster, featuring high-profile relationships with PARTYNEXTDOOR, Kyrie Irving, and YG. In 2021, she publicly came out as lesbian, adding another layer to her personal journey.
During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, she revealed that she's currently not on speaking terms with Javaughn Young-White, the father of her daughter, following a custody battle that turned sour. Young-White had accused Kehlani of being involved in a religious cult, although he later withdrew some of his claims.
Kehlani's openness about her struggles and triumphs in the realm of love and family paints a vivid picture of the unique challenges faced by celebrities trying to balance public and private life.
