Johan Cruyff’s name is forever etched in the history of world football, but his legacy continued not just in tactics, but also in his children. His youngest son, Jordi, named after the Catalan years of his father’s life, followed in his footsteps on the pitch. However, the former footballer recently made headlines not for his sporting achievements, but for a deeply personal and difficult story about his daughter’s battle with cancer.
In a recent interview, Jordi Cruyff reflected on the end of the 2022-2023 season. At that time, Barça was celebrating a La Liga victory, and Jordi, who was part of the club’s technical staff, had already decided to leave. Negotiations with other teams awaited him, along with plans to return to coaching. “And then, one day, I experienced the hardest moment of my life—when you find out your daughter has cancer,” he admitted. According to him, in the world of football, the game is often seen as the center of the universe, but “then reality gives you a slap in the face.”
His entire life instantly shifted to the illness of his eighteen-year-old daughter, Danai. Football, which had meant everything to him, was pushed far into the background. Cruyff admitted that he couldn’t watch a single full match all year. “I would watch for five minutes and turn it off—my mind was elsewhere. My mind was only with my daughter: surgery, bone, titanium implants, chemotherapy…” he shared, recalling those difficult times.
“I would watch for five minutes and turn it off—my mind was elsewhere. My mind was only with my daughter: surgery, bone, titanium implants, chemotherapy…”
The uncertainty of the future terrified him to his core. He drew parallels with the death of his famous father, but saw a fundamental difference. “My father died, but I was at peace with that. To me, that’s the natural order: grandfather, father, son, and so on. With this, I find no peace,” Jordi said. He felt anger at the whole world and a profound sense of injustice, thinking, “It should be me who goes, not her.”
Over time, as he watched how the situation unfolded, he realized he should be grateful, since there are those who lose their children, and that he needed to be strong for Danaya’s sake. Luis Enrique played a crucial part in this process. Cruyff noted that the coach had helped many people by speaking openly about his own family tragedy. “I admire them immensely,” Jordi said, adding that he even flew to London specifically just to sit with Enrique for half an hour and thank him.
Danaya herself, who briefly appeared in the interview, turned out to be, according to her father, “probably stronger” than him. She shared that she now feels “very well” and is “healthy.” While her father struggled to hold back tears, she told the almost unbelievable story of her diagnosis. It all began when her knee started locking up. The doctor who was supposed to see them was late for his flight or missed it entirely, giving him the opportunity to look into her case more thoroughly. That’s what led to the dreadful discovery. “How lucky that the doctor missed that flight and was able to examine her,” Jordi admitted.
Incidentally, Jordi Cruyff is the son of the legendary Dutch footballer and coach Johan Cruyff. He began his playing career at Barcelona, then moved to Manchester United, where he spent four seasons. He also played for other clubs, including the Spanish sides Celta and Alavés. After retiring as a player, Jordi worked as a sporting director at clubs in Cyprus and Israel, and also coached the Ecuador national team. Before returning to Barcelona as an advisor, he also worked as a coach in China.
