Jordana Brewster, the beloved Fast & Furious star, recently shared her intense experience of having brain surgery while fully awake. During a candid conversation on the SHE MD podcast, she revealed her battle with cavernous malformation (CVM) – a condition involving abnormal blood cells in the brain or spinal cord. First diagnosed at the age of 28, Jordana faced a pivotal moment when she experienced two "breakthrough" seizures in 2020, prompting her decision to undergo a craniotomy.
“They shaved this part,” she began, gesturing to the side of her head. “They opened my skull and I was on my side and there was someone in front of me showing me cards and sort of testing my language and two brilliant neurosurgeons behind me.”
Jordana recounted the surreal experience of being awake during the procedure, constantly communicating with her surgical team. This interaction was crucial as it helped the doctors navigate her brain safely. "If I couldn't come up with a word association or if I couldn't answer a question, they knew, 'OK, we've hit a part of the brain we shouldn't hit and let's stay away from there,'" she explained. This unique experience also led her to reflect on patients who are unable to communicate their needs, despite having the answers in their minds.
Thankfully, the surgery was a success, and Jordana hasn't experienced any seizures since. Reflecting on her journey, she mentioned how the year 2020 became a turning point in her life. "I kind of overhauled my life in 2020 and I think that helped also to give me the bravery to do something about the CVM," she shared with a smile. "I got a divorce. I found the love of my life. It was like (2006 book) Eat Pray Love on steroids. I just wanted this out so that I wouldn't be burdened by it anymore."
Now happily married to Mason Morfit since September 2022, Jordana continues to thrive, embracing her new chapter with sons Julian, 12, and Rowan, 10, whom she shares with ex-husband Andrew Form. This brave journey not only showcases her resilience but also inspires many facing similar challenges.
