Jacob Elordi, the charismatic star of "Euphoria," might seem like the perfect fit for the next James Bond. However, Debbie McWilliams, who knows a thing or two about casting the iconic spy, isn’t convinced. Despite Elordi’s rising fame and charm, McWilliams has voiced her doubts about him stepping into the legendary role.
McWilliams, a seasoned veteran in the Bond universe, has been a critical voice in the casting of past 007 legends like Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. She recently shared with The Independent her thoughts on the current names being tossed around for the role, including Elordi, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickinson.
“I don’t want to see any of them as James Bond,” McWilliams boldly stated, emphasizing the need for Bond to remain an enigma.
For McWilliams, the essence of James Bond lies in his mystique. An actor playing Bond should be someone who can convince audiences of his life as a spy – someone whose personal life remains largely unknown. She argues that Elordi's public persona, fueled by his roles in "Euphoria" and "Saltburn," might make him too familiar to maintain Bond's trademark secrecy.
McWilliams added that audiences shouldn’t have too much insight into Bond's personal life, including where he shops or who his parents are. This perspective presents a challenge for Elordi, who is becoming a household name in Hollywood.
While Elordi hasn't been officially ruled out by the studio, McWilliams’ comments cast a shadow over his Bond aspirations. The search for the next 007 is still underway, with Nina Gold leading the casting efforts. Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the upcoming film, working with a script penned by Steven Knight.
Elordi might still have a shot, but it seems the next James Bond will need to emerge from the shadows, much like his character. Whether Elordi can keep the world guessing remains to be seen. But one thing is clear – the Bond legacy demands a certain air of mystery.
