When the Glitter Fades: Stars Banned from the Oscars

Awards shows are usually all about the glitz, glam, and celebrating the biggest achievements in entertainment. But sometimes, they become the epicenter of Hollywood's juiciest controversies. Whether it's a shocking onstage moment or a scandal that rocked Tinseltown to its core, some stars have found themselves at odds with the institutions meant to honor them. In extreme cases, this led to formal bans from major award ceremonies, including the Oscars.

The Slap Heard 'Round the World: Will Smith

Will Smith's infamous Oscars moment in 2022 is one for the history books. During the live broadcast, Chris Rock took to the stage to present Best Documentary and cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head: "Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see ya." What happened next left everyone in shock – Smith marched up on stage and slapped Rock across the face. The incident, which instantly went viral, saw Smith yelling from his seat, demanding Rock keep his wife's name out of his "f—ing mouth."

"I accept and respect the Academy's decision," Smith said in a statement after being handed a 10-year ban from Academy events, including the Oscars.

In April 2022, the Academy's board reviewed the incident and decided on disciplinary action, barring Smith from attending any Academy events for a decade.

Harvey Weinstein: A Fall from Grace

Once a powerful figure in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein's descent was swift and severe. In 2017, after numerous allegations of sexual assault and misconduct came to light through groundbreaking reports by The New York Times and The New Yorker, the Academy took a stand. Their Board of Governors voted overwhelmingly to expel Weinstein, sending a clear message that the days of "willful ignorance and shameful complicity" were over.

Weinstein's legal troubles didn't end there. He was convicted of sexual assault in New York in 2020, earning a 23-year prison sentence, followed by a 16-year sentence in Los Angeles in 2023 for similar crimes. Although his 2020 conviction was overturned in 2024, Weinstein remains behind bars in California.

Bill Cosby: From Beloved Comedian to Convicted Felon

Bill Cosby, once a beloved figure in comedy, faced his downfall when he was expelled from the Academy in 2018 following his sexual assault conviction. In April of that year, he was found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, leading to a prison sentence of three to ten years.

Less than a month after Cosby's conviction, the Academy's Board of Governors voted to remove him, citing the importance of respect for human dignity as per their Standards of Conduct. Although Cosby's conviction was overturned in June 2021 due to a previous agreement with prosecutors, the Academy has not reinstated his membership.
