Gene Hackman’s personal treasures are about to find new homes, as his beloved Golden Globe trophies and art collection go up for auction. Bonhams Auctions announced that the first event will take place on November 19 in New York, focusing on art pieces he gathered throughout his illustrious life. This auction comes just months after the legendary two-time Oscar-winning actor passed away in February at the age of 95.
Bonhams Auctions is pulling out all the stops for this unique sale. Andrew Huber, Head of 20th and 21st Century Art at Bonhams, emphasized the prestige of these works, saying, “These are prestigious works with impeccable provenance, further enriched by their association with one of the greatest actors of our time.” Hackman wasn't just a collector – he was an artist at heart, and his collection reflects the same thoughtfulness and passion he brought to his craft.
“The Gene Hackman Collection offers a rare window into the artistic mind of a profoundly disciplined and instinctive artist,” Bonhams expressed on Instagram.
Beyond the in-person event, Bonhams is hosting two online sales from November 8 to 21 and November 25 to December 4. These will feature a stunning array of Hackman's personal artworks, annotated books, movie scripts, posters, and memorabilia. Fans and collectors will also have the chance to bid on three of his Golden Globes, including awards for "Unforgiven" and "Royal Tenenbaums," as well as his Lifetime Achievement Award from 2003.
The auction, while a celebration of Hackman's artistic legacy, also serves as a poignant reminder of his recent passing. Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, along with their dog, were found dead in their Santa Fe home in February. Initially considered suspicious, their deaths were later attributed to natural causes – Hackman from heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s, and Arakawa from a rare hantavirus-related illness.
This auction is not just about acquiring rare items; it's a tribute to a life lived with passion and artistry. As fans and collectors prepare to bid, they’re not just purchasing memorabilia – they’re taking home a piece of Gene Hackman’s enduring legacy.
