Flavor Flav, the iconic rapper known for his energetic personality and signature clock necklaces, has made a life-changing vow – he’s staying sober for the rest of his life. At 66, the artist, born William Jonathan Drayton Jr., opened up about his sobriety journey, months after a brief relapse in April. Flav shared his determination with People magazine, saying, “Right now it’s going very well. I’m back on point. I’m back on track, you know what I’m saying? And this is the way that I plan on staying for the rest of my life.”
“If you take a fall, don’t lay there and stay stuck. You got to get up off of that fall and you have to K-I-M – keep it moving.”
Flavor Flav isn’t just focusing on his own path; he’s also offering advice to those grappling with addiction. He encourages resilience, emphasizing the importance of moving forward. “Operation no choice is now in progress. Either you keep it moving, or you stay stuck. And the name of the game is to keep it moving.” This mantra is a testament to his personal growth and commitment to sobriety.
Back in April, Flavor took to Instagram to candidly share his brief relapse, stating his intent to hold himself accountable publicly. “I remain authentic to who I am and a large part of the past 4.5 years for me has been my sobriety journey. I think I’ve been an inspiration to many that if I could get sober, anyone can do it. But just when you think it’s easy, it ain’t. I briefly relapsed.”
Flavor Flav has been open about the struggles he faced during his years of addiction. In a revealing 2023 interview on the "Off the Record with DJ Akademiks" podcast, he disclosed spending an astounding $2,400 to $2,600 daily on drugs for six years. Despite this, he managed to maintain his public persona, keeping much of his drug use hidden.
His journey to sobriety began in 2020, and since then, he has been a beacon of hope for many. Reflecting on his past, he said, “I guess God wanted me to live. And he knows that I’m a mouthpiece to the world.” In October 2024, Flavor celebrated four years of sobriety and World Mental Health Day by covering therapy app subscriptions for fans, underlining his belief that mental health is crucial to his recovery.
Flavor Flav’s story is one of resilience and redemption, proving that even the most challenging battles can be overcome with determination and support.
