Emma Heming Willis is speaking out on how her family's world has been turned upside down due to Bruce Willis' ongoing battle with dementia. The 47-year-old model and influencer has taken on the role of caregiver for her husband, the iconic Die Hard star, who is now 70 and facing frontotemporal dementia. In her new book, "The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path," Emma opens up about the challenges her family faces, especially for their daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.
Emma candidly reveals how the condition has reshaped daily life for their daughters, aged 13 and 11. "The truth is, Mabel and Evelyn’s daily lives were being turned upside down," she writes. "For example, with FTD and other forms of dementia, some people become more sensitive to noise, which can cause distraction, confusion, and agitation. So I had everyone tiptoeing around the house to keep it as peaceful and serene as possible. This meant playdates were obsolete and forget about sleepovers."
"I know that Bruce has the best care 100 percent of the time. His needs are met 100 percent of the time, as well as our two young daughters’. So I’m not gonna take a vote on that."
Emma also reflects on the joyous memories Bruce has shared with their daughters, reminiscing about the "loud and crazy and fun" times they have enjoyed together.
Bruce, a father of five, also shares children Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah with his former wife, actress Demi Moore. Emma recently made the tough decision to move Bruce into a separate home equipped with a professional care team, aiming to create a more balanced environment for everyone. "No one was thriving" at home amid Bruce's health struggles, she noted.
In a candid interview with Good Morning America on September 9, Emma stood firm against social media backlash over her decision. She emphasized that the move was "the safest and best decision – not just for Bruce, but also for our two young girls."
Emma's heartfelt revelations in "The Unexpected Journey" offer a glimpse into the family's ongoing battle and resilience in the face of adversity. The book is a testament to her strength and dedication to her family's well-being, now available for readers looking for inspiration and understanding.
