Emma Heming is breaking her silence about the rocky road she faced with her husband, Bruce Willis, before his heartbreaking diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023. Married in 2009, the couple shares two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. But as Bruce's personality shifted, their relationship hit a rough patch. Emma opened up on The Oprah Podcast, admitting she once considered divorce due to his uncharacteristic behavior.
"Conversations we had, he wasn't recalling," Emma shared, reflecting on the challenging times. "Our values just didn't seem to be matching anymore."
She confessed to Oprah that she "100 percent" thought about leaving Bruce. "We were so connected, so enmeshed, and yet all of a sudden, things just started falling apart," she said, highlighting the emotional turmoil.
Emma revealed that Bruce's symptoms, such as loss of empathy and communication difficulties, had been present for a few years before they sought a diagnosis. "I didn't understand the conversations we were having," she explained. "We just weren't aligned, and I didn't know why. And he wasn't raising his hand about anything, and I did contemplate divorce." The former model knew it was time to act when she realized that "something wasn't right" with Bruce.
Emma took on the role of advocate, urging her husband to undergo testing. It was a journey filled with "smoke and mirrors," but she knew it was necessary. "I needed to raise my hand and try and be the best advocate I could for my husband," she recalled.
Despite the challenges, Emma and Bruce's relationship has transformed into something new. In a Vanity Fair interview, Emma described her marriage as "crumbling" before seeking help. "I was very angry, very upset, very sad," she said, emphasizing the emotional weight.
Yet, through the adversity, a deeper bond emerged. "It doesn't even feel like this 'husband and wife' thing," she shared. "We're almost past that... He's my person." Emma's connection with Bruce has evolved beyond traditional labels, showcasing resilience and love.
Emma and Bruce, who met in 2007 at a gym and tied the knot in Turks and Caicos, have the support of their blended family, including Bruce's ex-wife Demi Moore and their daughters, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah. The blended family stands united, providing strength and love in the face of Bruce's health battle.
