April 9, 2026, 3:18 p.m. ET – Sean "Diddy" Combs is not backing down. His legal team is fiercely battling to have his conviction for prostitution charges overturned. The hip-hop icon's lawyer has filed an appeal, arguing that the judge in Diddy's trial made a significant misstep by considering evidence of alleged abuse and threats against former girlfriends during sentencing.
On a pivotal Thursday, defense lawyer Alexandra Shapiro took the stand, asserting that judges should not factor in conduct related to charges for which a defendant has been acquitted. "This case presents an important issue about a respect for jury verdicts and public confidence in our criminal justice system," Shapiro passionately told the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. At the heart of this battle is Diddy's four-year and two-month prison sentence, which he is currently serving at a low-security facility in Fort Dix, New Jersey.
"This case presents an important issue about a respect for jury verdicts and public confidence in our criminal justice system," Shapiro told the court.
In a sensational seven-week trial last year, Diddy faced allegations of orchestrating drug-infused sexual escapades involving his former girlfriends and male escorts. The jury found him guilty on two counts of transportation for prostitution but acquitted him of more severe charges like sex trafficking. The trial's drama unfolded as jurors grappled with testimonies involving R&B/pop singer Casandra Ventura and another woman known as Jane.
As Diddy hopes for a successful appeal, the prosecution is not yielding. Prosecutor Christy Slavik is ready to counter the defense's claims, labeling them "meritless." According to Slavik, Judge Subramanian was justified in considering Combs' alleged threats and abuse as relevant to the case, painting a broader picture of his misconduct. This legal standoff continues to captivate public attention as both sides prepare their arguments.
Combs has been serving time since his arrest on September 16, 2024, marking over a year and a half behind bars. While he admits to past violence towards former partners, he insists these incidents were separate from the consensual sexual acts in question. If the appeal succeeds, Diddy could see an early release, but for now, his expected release date remains April 15, 2028.
