Daryl Hannah Blasts 'Love Story' for Misleading Portrayal

Daryl Hannah is taking a bold stand against what she calls an "appalling" depiction of her in the hit FX series "Love Story." The show, which delves into the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, offers a portrayal that Hannah says is far from accurate. In a guest essay for The New York Times, the "Kill Bill" star, now 65, candidly addresses the portrayal, asking, "How Can 'Love Story' Get Away With This?"

“The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue,” wrote Hannah, “It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show.”

Hannah dated Kennedy on and off for five years until 1994. She insists that the character named "Daryl Hannah" in the series does not reflect her real-life conduct or relationship with the iconic figure. The show, featuring Dree Hemingway as Hannah, premiered last month and has already become the most-watched limited series on platforms like Hulu and Disney+.

Setting the Record Straight

In her essay, Hannah firmly denies ever using cocaine or hosting the wild parties depicted in the series. She also refutes claims of pressuring anyone into marriage or intruding upon private memorials, specific actions depicted in the show. Moreover, Hannah dispels the narrative that she planted stories in the media or compared the death of Jacqueline Onassis to losing a pet.

Beyond her acting career, Hannah is an environmental advocate and documentarian. She typically avoids addressing "outrageous lies, crappy stories, and unflattering characterizations," but the backlash from the show's portrayal has prompted her to speak out. According to Hannah, the portrayal has led to "many hostile and even threatening messages from viewers," which she feels compelled to address.

A Call for Respect and Privacy

Hannah, who married Neil Young in 2018, emphasized that she respects the Kennedy family's privacy and criticized the "self-serving sensationalists" who contributed to the series' narrative. She expressed concern that the show's fictionalized elements could affect her ongoing work, including her involvement in animal-assisted therapy for seniors.

Hannah's plea is clear: "Real names are not fictional tools. They belong to real lives. … Online lies endure." Her words reflect a desire for authenticity and respect in storytelling, especially when it involves real people and their stories.
