Blake Lively is making headlines with her demand for a whopping $8 million in legal fees from actor and director Justin Baldoni. This comes after the duo reached a settlement over their rocky collaboration on the 2024 film, "It Ends With Us." The legal drama unfolded in New York, where Lively's attorneys disclosed the hefty sum, which includes nearly $7.5 million in legal fees and an additional $500,000 in other expenses.
The showdown between Lively and Baldoni was set to erupt in a Manhattan federal court, but they settled just in the nick of time. Lively had accused Baldoni of launching a campaign to tarnish her reputation after she alleged sexual harassment on the film's set. Baldoni, who directed and starred alongside Lively, denied these accusations flatly.
“They could have ended it (and offered to reimburse Lively) at any time. Having refused to do so, they should be ordered to reimburse Lively for all of the costs, attorney’s fees, and expenses they improperly forced her to incur,” her lawyers argued passionately.
Though Lively didn't receive any monetary compensation in the settlement, a judge ruled she could reclaim some legal costs after Baldoni countersued her. Michael Gottlieb, one of Lively's lawyers, highlighted his reduced hourly rate of $2,187, totaling $457,000 for 224 hours of work on her defense.
Judge Lewis J. Liman dismissed Baldoni's countersuit and Lively's harassment claims, citing her status as an independent contractor. However, he allowed her to recover legal costs under a California law that protects harassment survivors from retaliatory lawsuits. Liman noted Baldoni failed to prove Lively's claims were malicious.
The judge outlined that $4.5 million should go to Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Gottlieb's firm, and about $3 million to Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP. The court rejected Lively's attempts to seek punitive damages, adhering to federal rules.
"It Ends With Us," based on Colleen Hoover's novel, hit theaters in August 2024, surpassing box office expectations despite the off-screen drama.
