Last fall, the magnetic Billy Porter made headlines for an unexpected reason – his abrupt exit from the Broadway production of Cabaret. The reason? A harrowing battle with sepsis that brought him to the brink of death. This week, Porter shared his chilling experience on the Outlaws podcast, revealing that his illness nearly cost him his life.
Porter, 56, recounted the frightening episode that began with a kidney stone so severely infected that it spiraled into urosepsis, a dangerous condition that can occur when a urinary tract infection spreads to the kidneys. Once hospitalized, Porter was put on an ECMO machine, a form of life support. Things took a dire turn when his leg developed compartment syndrome, necessitating surgery to save it.
“I was dead for three days,” Porter shared, his voice heavy with emotion. “I am a miracle. I’m a walking miracle.” He expressed profound gratitude, adding, “I am so grateful to be here. It is such a gift.”
This brush with death has inspired Porter to embrace a new chapter of honesty. Reflecting on a recent viral red-carpet moment where he called out Nicki Minaj for her support of Donald Trump, Porter admitted that his scare made him realize he had been "unconsciously silencing" himself. Lying in his hospital bed, he heard a voice urging him, “Don’t you ever stop telling the truth again.”
Porter's story is a testament to resilience and the power of truth. As he continues to recover, the Tony Award winner seems more determined than ever to use his voice without fear, reminding us all of the strength found in vulnerability.
