Timothée Chalamet was only 17 when he walked onto the set of a massive Christopher Nolan production. The Los Angeles Times even singled out Interstellar as Chalamet’s first big studio movie.

His role was small but visible – he played young Tom Cooper, the teenage son of McConaughey’s character. Most of his screen time lives in the film’s opening stretch before the story jumps forward and Casey Affleck takes over as the older Tom. Apple’s film listing notes the character as Tom at 15, which aligns with how the part is presented on screen.

The role itself wasn’t a blockbuster-making lead. Chalamet appears primarily in the film’s early scenes, then steps aside for the older Tom. Still, being on a $165 million Christopher Nolan set is no small apprenticeship. The production exposed him to large-scale filmmaking and positioned him beside seasoned stars and technicians.

For a teenager who had just finished high school and was about to begin college, the transition from small projects to Interstellar was a steep one. The experience gave him something more valuable than screen minutes – a close-up view of how major Hollywood movies are built.

Already acting – he wasn’t brand new

TV gigs, shorts and a feature debut

Interstellar wasn’t Chalamet’s first time in front of a camera. He had accumulated television credits on shows like Law & Order, Royal Pains and Homeland. His turn as Finn Walden on Homeland was particularly useful because it taught him how to navigate a major television production before Nolan called.

He’d also made two short films prior to Interstellar. In 2014, Chalamet appeared in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children, which is generally listed as his feature debut. Interstellar followed as his second feature film, so he arrived on Nolan’s set with some on-set experience already under his belt.

"I remember being 17 on set and still trying to figure out who I was as an actor," Chalamet later reflected, describing how new he still felt during that time.

Working on Interstellar meant Chalamet suddenly shared scenes and space with established actors. McConaughey played his father, Anne Hathaway was Amelia Brand, Jessica Chastain played the adult Murph, and Michael Caine was also part of the cast. Chalamet later said McConaughey became an important mentor during the shoot – a memorable real-life bond since they were portraying father and son.

Surprisingly, that early studio credit didn’t catapult Chalamet into instant fame. After Interstellar he continued taking smaller roles in films like The Adderall Diaries, One & Two and Miss Stevens, while still doing television and theater work.

His true breakout arrived years later. In 2017 he appeared in Lady Bird and Hostiles, but it was Call Me by Your Name that changed his trajectory. Released when he was 21, his performance as Elio Perlman earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and framed him as one of Hollywood’s most promising young talents.
