Anthony Boyle's Bold Choice: No Prosthetics Here!

Anthony Boyle, the breakout star of Netflix's 'House of Guinness,' has set social media ablaze with a scene that's got everyone talking. In a daring full-frontal moment, Boyle revealed he went au naturel, choosing not to use a prosthetic. “It’s my own body,” the actor candidly shared, adding a layer of authenticity that fans couldn't help but notice.

The Scene That Shocked and Awed

In Episode 3, Boyle's character, Arthur Guinness, is seen enjoying a smoke and a drink while leisurely soaking in a bath. The scene takes a bold turn when Arthur rises from the water, baring it all for the audience. This powerful moment is not just about nudity but also about character dominance. Boyle explained to Men’s Health, “It’s not a prosthetic. It’s my own body.” The only other person in the scene is an older male servant, highlighting the power dynamic as Arthur disdainfully accepts a towel to dry off.

“I sort of wrote that aspect into the scene,” Boyle told the publication. “It was the night before we were filming, and [Arthur] was in the script originally meant to be getting his cufflinks on by the mirror. That felt a bit boring, so I called the director and said, ‘I think he should be smoking and drinking whiskey in the bath, and he should be completely naked and just get up, to show that he owns the whole fucking world.’”

Exploring Arthur Guinness: A Queer Icon?

Boyle's portrayal of Arthur Guinness also dives into longstanding rumors about the character's sexuality. While historical texts like Joe Joyce’s 'The Guinnesses: The Untold Story of Ireland’s Most Successful Family' suggest Arthur might have been gay, Boyle brings this theory to life on-screen in a major way. "I didn’t know much about the Guinness family and everything was new to me," Boyle admitted. "One thing Steven [Knight], who wrote the show, and I really wanted to get right is that we didn’t ever feel like Arthur should be ashamed of his sexuality. He should be proud of it – the world around him got it wrong, but he knew who he was and felt pride in that."

A Role for the Ages

Boyle’s commitment to authenticity doesn’t stop at nudity. His dedication to portraying Arthur as a proud, queer figure is a vital part of the show’s narrative. "People have been gay from the dawn of time," Boyle concluded. "If we don’t follow the clues and write these people into history, then we’re writing them out of history. With a role like Arthur, the clues about everything are there, so if we were just to pretend that he wasn’t gay, we would be doing a disservice to everyone – and to history."
