Angelina Jolie’s family moment caught attention when son Knox Jolie-Pitt celebrated high school graduation in a blue cap and gown, decked out with leis and Tibetan prayer flags. The standout look was a snapshot of youthful individuality – and Knox didn’t stop there. That same night he headed to a Muay Thai fight, proving the family’s mix of ceremony and personal passion.
Small, vivid details like Knox’s choice of tribute flags and the evening’s plans underlined a bigger theme Jolie touched on in a recent interview – her kids are making their own choices and following their own rhythms.
In a rare, wide-ranging interview with fashion magazine L'Officiel published Sept. 9, the 51-year-old Oscar winner spoke frankly about her approach to motherhood. Jolie said her children are “definitely individuals” and emphasized that their independence is something she’s proud of.
“What makes me proud is watching them become their own people – and knowing my job was to give them room to do it,”
Jolie described parenting as a balance – doing what’s needed while avoiding getting in the way of the human being your child is becoming. She stressed the importance of support that allows each child to explore their potential outside of their parents’ shadows.
That stance reflects a wider shift for Jolie as her kids move into adulthood – she’s consciously stepping back to watch and encourage rather than direct.
Jolie shares Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18, with ex-husband Brad Pitt. Several of the children have chosen to distance themselves from Pitt’s surname – Shiloh has legally changed her name, and Zahara, Vivienne and Maddox have filed to do the same.
Many of them have dipped into creative work. Jolie noted that Maddox and Pax learned the ropes on film sets by working as assistant directors. She made a point that anyone interested in filmmaking should understand each department – and prove they can do the hard work behind the camera.
The siblings aren’t all heading toward the same finish line. Maddox is focused on aviation, while Pax is exploring photography and may yet return to film. Even when they collaborate professionally with their mother, Jolie says she remains “just Mom,” grateful for the time they spend together.
Those varied pursuits show the family’s appetite for real, hands-on experience rather than celebrity for celebrity’s sake.
As her children grow more independent, Jolie is looking to reclaim pieces of her life that were quieter while she was parenting. The "Maria" star told L'Officiel she’s eager for deeper connection and community, and she’s planning more travel and fieldwork.
Jolie also wants to expand her involvement with her foundation in Cambodia and revisit adventurous hobbies she set aside – from riding a motorcycle to learning to pilot a plane. She said her children understand she gave them the years they needed and now support her stepping back into the wider world while they continue forging their own paths.
That mutual encouragement feels less like an ending and more like a new chapter – for Jolie, and for the next generation of Jolie-Pitts.
