A Health Crisis in the Wake of ‘Rust’

Alec Baldwin is breaking his silence on the profound toll the 'Rust' shooting aftermath took on him. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, he shared how deeply the tragic 2021 incident affected every aspect of his life, from his health to his career and family dynamics. Reflecting on the ordeal, Baldwin didn't mince words: "That was unspeakably difficult to deal with."

Work came to a screeching halt as Baldwin withdrew from the public eye. "I wound up staying home a lot. I was home with my kids for three-and-a-half years – I hardly worked at all," he revealed. The actor admitted that the desire to remain at home became overwhelming, stating, "I don’t want to leave my house anymore. I don’t. I don’t want to work anymore. I don’t. I really don’t. I want to retire and stay home with my kids."

“It impacted me in every way – financially, career-wise, my wife, my kids, my health. I was so sick,” Baldwin shared, highlighting the severe repercussions he faced.

Struggling with Health and Professional Obligations

Compounding the emotional stress was a health condition that disrupted Baldwin's daily life. He developed orthostatic hypotension, causing sudden blood pressure drops and blackouts. "I blacked out three times during the St. Patrick's Day weekend of that year," he recalled, "and fell on top of my wife once. It was crazy. It was horrible." The severity of his symptoms left him bedridden for days and required physical therapy to regain his footing.

Despite these challenges, Baldwin was contractually obligated to return to Montana and complete filming 'Rust.' This was part of a settlement arrangement with the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. "I had to get up on a horse and go back there to Montana to finish the film, or they were going to sue the s*** out of me," Baldwin explained. "I don’t give the performance I want to give because I’m sick, but I did the best I could."

The ordeal left a lasting impact on Baldwin, who continues to grapple with the aftermath of that fateful day, navigating both personal and professional hurdles.
