Akon, the celebrated Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist, hit a legal snag in Georgia over the weekend. Police nabbed him following a warrant related to a vehicle registered in his name. The saga began when officers from the Chamblee Police Department received a wanted person alert for a white Tesla Cybertruck. This alert originated from the Roswell Police Department, according to a report obtained by USA TODAY.
The Roswell Police Department's investigation flagged the vehicle's owner due to a suspended license. On Friday, Nov. 7, officers spotted the vehicle parked at Tint World, an automotive styling business. Upon arrival, they identified a man matching the description of the registered owner.
"Akon remained calm and acknowledged the warrant," the report noted, highlighting the singer's composed demeanor during the encounter.
Once police confirmed the man was Akon, they informed him of his arrest. The report emphasized that Akon, whose legal name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, was cooperative throughout the process. A search revealed no weapons or contraband in his possession.
Akon, known for hits like "Smack That," was taken to the DeKalb County Jail. He was booked around 12:30 p.m. and released by 6:30 p.m. the same day. USA TODAY reached out to his representatives for comment on the situation.
This legal hiccup traces back to a September 10 incident. Akon's Cybertruck was found stranded by police after its battery died. When officers ran the vehicle's information, they discovered his license was suspended. Akon received a citation for driving with a suspended license and was released from the scene due to "manpower issues in the city."
The story is a reminder that even celebrities aren't immune to the rules of the road. Akon's representatives have yet to comment further on the matter.
